✊🏾 State of the Union

Good Morning, Fam'! Yesterday, OpenAI published its framework for why teens deserve access to safe AI, and the numbers inside it should reset how every parent in our community thinks about this technology. Nearly 9 in 10 teens on ChatGPT use it weekly for learning, skill building, or schoolwork. 18 million people a week now use its interactive math and science experiences covering more than 250 topics. One student featured, Oriana McKenzie, used it to become number one in her high school class by studying smarter, not longer. This is not the future. This is right now, and our children are either equipped for it or left behind by it.

Here is what parents need to know before the school year starts. Study Mode guides students through problems step by step with questions instead of just handing them answers, and parents with linked teen accounts can now turn it on by default through Parental Controls. Those controls also let you set quiet hours, manage image generation, turn off voice mode, and receive notifications in high risk situations. Free family guides are published in over 50 languages. The generation gap in our community cannot be that our kids know AI and we do not. We supervise what we understand.

And here is why this matters more for us. Education has always been our community's leverage: HBCUs make up just 3% of colleges but produce roughly 20% of all Black graduates and a quarter of Black STEM graduates, per UNCF. Meanwhile, Black builders are creating the tools our kids need: Aisha, Latimer.AI, ChatBlackGPT, and SparkPlug lead a growing Black built AI ecosystem, now joined by platforms like Ballin AI, founded by a young Black woman to get our athletes recruited. This issue is your family's back to school system: study tools, college visits, recruiting, and the prompts to run all of it.

Ballin AI | The Black Woman Built Platform Changing How Young Athletes Get Recruited

THE SCOOP

Nyla Pollard, a former Division I player at William and Mary, founded Ballin AI in 2023 after watching talented teammates get overlooked by a recruiting system built on connections instead of data. Athletes upload their game film, get evaluated and scored across defense, shooting, rebounding, scoring, transition, ball handling, and finishing, then receive a personalized development plan and entry into an AI powered ranking system coaches actually use. She closed a $500K angel round, built a team of 13, and landed a pilot partnership with Nike.

THE VIBE CHECK

The recruiting game has always favored families with money for showcases, private trainers, and connections. Ballin AI puts a professional evaluation and a development roadmap in reach of any family with game film and a phone. The strategy for parents: film your athlete's games this season, upload to Ballin AI for an evaluation before recruiting season, use the development plan to focus offseason training, and share the scored report directly with college coaches, including HBCU programs, as a professional first impression. A young Black woman built the door. Walk your kids through it.

THIS WEEK'S MICRO-SAAS IDEA

LegacyTour | The AI HBCU Visit and College Match Platform For Black Families

Turning college selection from guesswork into a guided family experience

Phase 1 | Validate (Days 1-14)
Interview 10 families with high schoolers. Confirm the gap: most families visit 1 or 2 campuses because of cost and planning burden, choose schools with incomplete information, and never get a structured comparison of academics, aid, campus culture, and career outcomes.

Phase 2 | Build (Days 15-45)
Build a platform that matches students to HBCUs based on major, budget, location, and campus culture, generates optimized multi campus road trip itineraries, and preps families with AI generated question lists for each visit. Use Lovable for the build and SartorialAI for family inquiry capture.

Phase 3 | Launch (Days 46-90)
Partner with churches, Jack and Jill chapters, and college prep programs. Free for families, monetized through HBCU recruitment partnerships and sponsored visit weekends. Over 100 HBCUs are competing for enrollment. You are building their pipeline.

MEGA PROMPT

"Act as an education technology entrepreneur. I am building LegacyTour, an AI powered HBCU matching and campus visit planning platform for Black families.

1. MARKET ANALYSIS: Estimate the market for college matching and visit planning tools targeting Black families, factoring in HBCU enrollment trends and recruitment budgets.

2. FEATURE ROADMAP: Build a 90 day MVP with the 5 features families would use most: matching, itinerary building, visit prep, aid comparison, and decision tracking.

3. HBCU PARTNERSHIP PITCH: Write a pitch to an HBCU admissions director explaining how this platform delivers qualified, visit ready families to their campus.

4. COMMUNITY DISTRIBUTION: Identify 10 trusted community channels to reach families of high school juniors and seniors."
🎨 Marketing Moves

STRATEGY 1 | THE BACK TO SCHOOL AUTHORITY PLAY

If you serve families in any capacity, tutor, coach, counselor, barber, church leader, own the back to school conversation now. Build a short video series: how to set up Study Mode, how to use Parental Controls, how to prep for HBCU visits. Research with Aisha or Latimer.AI, produce with InVideo AI. Parents share what helps their kids. That is the most viral content category in our community every August.

STRATEGY 2 | THE ATHLETE FAMILY PIPELINE

Coaches, trainers, and sports program leaders: make Ballin AI evaluations part of your program's value. Host a film upload night where families submit game footage together. Use ElevenLabs to record a walkthrough parents can replay. Every athlete who gets evaluated and recruited through your program becomes your best marketing forever.

AFFILIATE SPOTLIGHT

InVideo AI: Turn any back to school guide or family resource into a polished video in under 30 minutes. Parents trust faces, not flyers.

💼 Career Moves

Pivoting Into AI College and Career Advising | The Counselor Our Kids Never Had

The average public school counselor carries a caseload of hundreds of students. Our kids get minutes of college guidance per year, if that. That gap created a real career: independent college and career advisors who use AI to deliver personalized guidance at scale. Advisors who know the HBCU landscape, financial aid strategy, and scholarship research charge $75 to $200 per hour, and families pay it because the return, in aid dollars alone, is enormous. If you have education, counseling, or admissions experience, this is a business you can launch before this school year starts.

"Act as a career strategist for independent education consultants.

1. SKILL MAPPING: I will describe my background. Map it to an independent college advising practice and identify 60 day gaps to close. [PASTE YOUR BACKGROUND HERE]

2. SERVICE MENU: Design 3 service packages: college matching, application support, and financial aid strategy, with pricing for each.

3. AI WORKFLOW: List how AI tools accelerate each part of my practice: school research, essay coaching, scholarship matching, and family communication.

4. FIRST 10 CLIENTS: Outline how to land my first 10 families before September using community channels, not paid ads."

The HBCU Match Maker | Build Your Child's College Visit Plan In One Session

Run this with your high schooler, not for them. The conversation it starts is worth more than the output. Works in ChatGPT, Claude, or Aisha.

"Act as a college advisor specializing in HBCUs and helping Black families make confident college decisions.

MY STUDENT: [SHARE GRADE LEVEL, GPA RANGE, INTENDED MAJOR OR INTERESTS, BUDGET REALITY, LOCATION PREFERENCES, AND WHAT MATTERS MOST: CAMPUS LIFE, SPORTS, GREEK LIFE, RESEARCH, ETC.]

1. THE MATCH LIST: Recommend 8 HBCUs that fit this profile: 3 reach, 3 match, 2 safety. For each, explain why it fits and name its strongest program for my student's interest.

2. THE VISIT PLAN: Group these campuses into realistic road trip routes we could complete over 2 to 3 weekends, with suggested order.

3. THE QUESTION LIST: Give us 10 questions to ask on every campus visit, covering academics, aid, retention, career outcomes, and campus culture.

4. THE MONEY MAP: For each school, list the major scholarship programs and aid deadlines we should track starting now.

5. THE DECISION FRAMEWORK: Build a simple scorecard we can fill out after each visit so we compare schools on facts, not just feelings."

High Value Skill: The Family AI Setup 🎓

The most valuable skill for a parent this month is 45 minutes of setup. 9 in 10 teens already use AI for school. The question is whether it is teaching them or doing their work for them. Study Mode changes that: it guides step by step with questions instead of answers, and parents can now make it the default on a linked teen account.

This Week's Challenge: Sit down with your student before school starts. Link accounts, turn on Study Mode through Parental Controls, set quiet hours for school nights, and review OpenAI's free family guide together. Then run the prompt below with them.

"Act as an academic coach helping a student build a study system for the new school year.

MY CLASSES AND GOALS: [STUDENT LISTS THEIR CLASSES, HARDEST SUBJECTS, AND GPA GOAL]

1. THE WEEKLY SYSTEM: Build a realistic weekly study schedule around my actual schedule, practices, and activities.

2. THE HARD SUBJECT PLAN: For my toughest class, design a study method using practice questions and step by step problem solving, not memorization.

3. THE TOOL RULES: Give me 5 rules for using AI to learn instead of using it to cheat, so my work is always mine.

4. THE CHECK IN: Create a 10 minute weekly self review I can do every Sunday to stay on track."
🧰 Tools To Level Up

Ballin AI: Upload game film, get a professional evaluation and development plan, and put your athlete in front of college coaches. Built by Nyla Pollard, a former D1 player who built the door she never had. If you have a hooper in your house, start here.

Our grandparents fought for our right to sit in the classroom. Our job is to make sure our kids walk in ready to run it. Set up the tools. Plan the visits. Upload the film. The school year is coming. Be early.
