Good Morning, Fam'! Today we honor Whitney M. Young Jr., born July 31, 1921. As head of the National Urban League from 1961 to 1971, he did something few leaders dared: he walked into corporate boardrooms and the White House and demanded investment in our communities. He grew the Urban League from 60 chapters to 98, co-authored President Johnson's War on Poverty, called for a domestic Marshall Plan for Black America, and earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He took heat from some who thought he was too close to white power, but Young understood something essential: you cannot redistribute resources you refuse to go near. He bridged the gap between where the money was and where the need was. That was his genius.
Tomorrow, August 1st, begins Black Philanthropy Month, a global celebration of Black giving founded in 2011. And here is the truth it exists to correct: our community gives generously, Black households give a larger share of their income to charity than any other group, but too little of that giving flows to Black led organizations solving our own problems. Young spent his life directing resources toward our community. Black Philanthropy Month asks us to do the same, deliberately.
So this issue asks two questions. First, is there a nonprofit you should start, a gap in your community only you can see? And second, just as important, is there one already doing your dream work that you should fund, join, or amplify instead? Not every calling requires you to build from scratch. Sometimes honoring Whitney Young means writing the check, volunteering the hours, or lending your AI skills to an organization that has been fighting this fight for years. Both are how we win.
Google Just Gave Nonprofits Free AI Training and Coaching | Right Before Black Philanthropy Month
THE SCOOP
Google.org launched three free AI resources for nonprofits: three free on demand courses covering fundraising, marketing, and operations that take about three hours total, free one on one coaching with Google product specialists, and new research from over 6,000 nonprofits on how they use AI. The headline stat: nonprofits using AI report saving one full workday per person, per week. Yet while 86% believe AI can help, only 49% use it regularly. Funding and training are the barriers, and Google just removed the training one for free.

Black led nonprofits are chronically under resourced and overworked, doing the most with the least. A tool that gives every staffer back a full day a week is not a convenience, it is survival. The play: a lean nonprofit using AI to monitor local legislation, alert the community, and mobilize fast. Or support: the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, your local bail fund, or a community legal aid org already fighting.
MODEL 2 | CAREER AND WORKFORCE ADVANCEMENT
The community need: job training, resume and interview prep, and placement, exactly the work Whitney Young built the Urban League around. The play: an AI powered career center offering free resume building, interview practice, and skills training. Or support: your local Urban League chapter, one of 98 he grew, still doing this work today.
MODEL 3 | YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND MENTORSHIP
The community need: safe spaces, mentorship, tutoring, and enrichment for our young people outside school hours. The play: an after school or weekend program using AI to personalize tutoring and free up mentors to mentor. Or support: a Boys and Girls Club, 100 Black Men chapter, or a local grassroots youth program that already has the trust.
MODEL 4 | AI AND TECH EDUCATION
The community need: closing the AI skills gap before it becomes the next wealth gap. The play: a nonprofit teaching free AI literacy to elders, youth, and career changers in our community. Or support: organizations like Black Girls Code, AllStarCode, or /dev/color already building our tech pipeline.
