✊🏾 State of the Union

Good Morning, Fam'!

Frederick Douglass stood before a mostly white audience in Rochester, New York and asked the question that still echoes: "What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July?" His answer was that the holiday revealed, more than any other day, the gap between what America promised and what it practiced. Douglass was not rejecting the promise. He was demanding it be kept. That is the assignment we inherited. And 174 years later, the gap is still real: the Black white voter turnout gap widened to 11 percentage points in 2024, back to levels not seen since the 1980s. Black youth turnout fell to 34%, and young Black men came in at just 25%. Douglass would ask us the same question he asked them: what is your celebration worth if your voice goes unused?

This week, Anthropic redeployed Claude Fable 5, its most capable model, back to the public as of July 1st after a brief government export control hold was lifted. It relaunched with the strongest safeguards ever applied to an AI model. Here is why that matters to us: Fable 5 can explain civics in plain language, walk a first time voter through registration in their state, help a parent break down how local government actually works to a teenager, and help you design a real civic action plan for your neighborhood. Douglass taught himself to read when it was illegal, because he understood that literacy is power. Civic literacy is the same fight. This is the tool he would have put in every Black hand in America.

And here is the question this issue is really about. Twenty five years from now, your children and grandchildren are going to ask you what you did during this political era. Not what you posted. What you did. This issue is built to make sure you have a real answer: who you registered, what you taught, what you organized, what you built. Douglass gave his answer in 1852. The tools to give yours are sitting in your pocket right now.

Claude Fable 5 Is Back | The Most Capable Public AI Model Just Returned

THE SCOOP

Anthropic released Claude Fable 5 on June 9th. Three days later, the US government applied export controls over a cybersecurity concern, and access was suspended for everyone. After weeks of testing with government partners, the controls were lifted June 30th and Fable 5 came back online July 1st with upgraded safeguards. Anthropic is also partnering with Amazon, Microsoft, and Google on a shared industry framework for AI safety.

THE VIBE CHECK

The most powerful AI tool available to the public is back, and most people will use it to write emails. Do not be most people. Use it to understand your rights, prep for civic meetings, break down ballot measures in plain language, and teach the young people in your life how the system actually works. And keep supporting the tools built for us: Aisha, Latimer.AI, ChatBlackGPT, and SparkPlug, four Black centered AI platforms now live. Use the most capable tools and the most culturally grounded ones together. That is a full toolkit.

THIS WEEK'S MICRO-SAAS IDEA

FirstVote | The AI Civic Onboarding Platform For Young Black Voters

Turning the 25% into a movement, one first time voter at a time

Phase 1 | Validate (Days 1-14)
Interview 10 young people ages 18 to 24 who did not vote in the last election. Confirm the gap: most were never shown how, never asked personally, and found the process confusing. Research backs this up, the top barriers for Black youth are access and information, not apathy.

Phase 2 | Build (Days 15-45)
Build a mobile first tool with an AI guide that walks a first time voter through registration in their state, explains what is actually on their local ballot in plain language, and sends reminders for registration deadlines and election days. Use Lovable to build it fast.

Phase 3 | Launch (Days 46-90)
Partner with HBCUs, barbershops, churches, and youth sports programs for distribution. Fund it through partnerships with civic nonprofits and foundations that already spend millions trying to reach exactly this audience.

MEGA PROMPT

"Act as a civic technology entrepreneur who has built voter engagement platforms for underserved communities. I am building FirstVote, an AI civic onboarding platform for young Black first time voters.

1. BARRIER ANALYSIS: Summarize the documented barriers to voting for Black youth ages 18 to 24 and rank them by how solvable each is with technology.

2. FEATURE ROADMAP: Build a 90 day MVP roadmap with the 5 features most likely to convert a registered non voter into an actual voter.

3. TRUST DESIGN: Outline how to build trust with young users who are skeptical of political institutions, including tone, messaging, and what the platform should never do.

4. FUNDING MAP: Identify 10 types of civic foundations, nonprofits, and grant programs that fund youth voter engagement work."
🎨 Marketing Moves

STRATEGY 1 | THE DOUGLASS QUESTION CAMPAIGN

This holiday weekend, while everyone else posts fireworks, post the question. Build a short video series asking elders and young people in your community the same two questions: what does the 4th mean to you, and what are you doing with your voice this year. Use InVideo AI to produce it fast. Real answers from real faces in your community will outperform any graphic you could design.

STRATEGY 2 | THE KITCHEN TABLE CIVICS SERIES

Record short audio explainers breaking down one civic concept per week in plain language: what a city council actually controls, how a ballot measure works, what a school board vote decides. Use ElevenLabs to produce and distribute them. Civic literacy spreads the same way our stories always have, voice to voice.

AFFILIATE SPOTLIGHT

InVideo AI: Turn any civic message into a polished video in under 30 minutes. No production crew needed.

One brand shipped 30+ landing pages last week. No developers.

A DTC brand briefed Viktor inside Slack: one landing page per Meta ad group, mapped to a different headline variant. He wrote the code, deployed each page to their subdomain, posted the URLs back in #marketing, and now monitors performance across the set.

Their content team uses him to draft email flows, generate creative variants, and audit Klaviyo segments every Friday. Their growth lead uses him to catch spend anomalies before the day starts.

20,000+ teams now have the same setup: one AI employee across every marketing tool. A teammate who ships work in Slack and Microsoft Teams.

💼 Career Moves

Pivoting Into Civic Technology | Getting Paid To Strengthen Democracy

Civic tech is a real and growing career lane: organizations building voter engagement platforms, government digital services, community organizing tools, and election infrastructure all need people who understand both technology and community. If you have experience in community organizing, nonprofit work, education, communications, or customer facing tech roles, you have the foundation. These roles pay $65K to $120K at civic nonprofits, foundations, and government digital service teams, and the mission comes built in.

"Act as a Civic Tech Career Strategist who has placed professionals into roles at civic nonprofits, government digital services, and voter engagement organizations.

1. SKILL MAPPING: I will describe my background. Map it to civic tech roles and identify 60 day gaps to close. [PASTE YOUR BACKGROUND HERE]

2. ORGANIZATION LIST: Identify 10 types of civic tech organizations and fellowships actively hiring or recruiting right now.

3. RESUME REPOSITIONING: Rewrite three of my past roles to highlight community impact and technology fluency.

4. PORTFOLIO PROJECT: Design one volunteer civic tech project I could complete in 30 days that would prove my value to these employers."

The 25 Year Answer | Design Your Civic Legacy Plan

Twenty five years from now, when the young people in your family ask what you did during this era, you want a real answer. This prompt helps you design it now. Run it in Claude, in Aisha, in whatever tool you trust. Then actually do what comes out of it.

"Act as a civic engagement strategist helping me design a personal civic action plan I can actually sustain.

MY SITUATION: [DESCRIBE YOUR CITY, YOUR SCHEDULE, YOUR SKILLS, AND THE ISSUES YOU CARE ABOUT MOST]

1. VOICE AUDIT: Based on my skills and time, identify the 3 highest impact civic actions available to me this year, from voter registration drives to school board meetings to mutual aid.

2. THE REGISTRATION GOAL: Help me build a realistic plan to personally help 10 people in my circle register to vote or confirm their registration before the next election.

3. THE YOUTH CONVERSATION: Give me a plain language script for explaining to a teenager in my life how local government affects their daily world, their school, their streets, their opportunities, and why their future vote matters.

4. THE RECORD: Design a simple way to document my civic actions over time, so that decades from now I have a real answer when the next generation asks what I did."
💰 Skill Builder

High Value Skill: AI Powered Civic Translation 🗳️

Ballot measures, city budgets, and zoning decisions are written to be unreadable. The person in your community who can translate them into plain language becomes indispensable, to neighbors, to organizations, and to campaigns that pay for exactly this skill. Research from Tufts found the top barriers for young Black voters are information and access, not motivation. Translation is the fix.

This Week's Challenge: Find one upcoming ballot measure, council vote, or policy in your city. Run the prompt below and share the plain language version with 5 people.

"Act as a civic translator who makes government documents readable for everyday people.

THE DOCUMENT OR MEASURE: [PASTE THE TEXT OR DESCRIBE THE BALLOT MEASURE OR POLICY]

1. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: Explain what this actually does in 3 sentences a high schooler could understand.

2. WHO IT AFFECTS: Break down specifically how this impacts renters, homeowners, workers, small business owners, and students in my community.

3. BOTH SIDES: Summarize the strongest honest argument for it and the strongest honest argument against it.

4. THE SHARE VERSION: Write a short, neutral, factual explainer I can text to friends and family so they can decide for themselves."

The Barber Who Registered A Block

Shout out to Dre, a barber in Virginia who got tired of hearing young men in his chair say voting doesn't matter. He didn't argue. He set up a tablet at his station with an AI assistant loaded and started a simple routine: while the cut happens, the client asks the AI one question about how local government affects something they actually care about, their rent, their kid's school, the stop sign that never got installed. By the end of most cuts, the conversation changed on its own. Dre keeps voter registration QR codes taped to his mirror. In four months, 61 people registered or confirmed their registration out of his shop. No lectures. No shame. Just information, one chair at a time. When his daughter asks him someday what he did during this era, Dre has his answer taped to a mirror.

🧰 Tools To Level Up

ElevenLabs: Record civic explainers and community voices in audio form. Douglass moved a nation with his voice. Yours can move a neighborhood.

InVideo AI: Turn any civic message into a polished video in under 30 minutes. No production crew needed.

Douglass answered his era's question with his voice, his pen, and his feet. Our era is asking us the same question right now. Register somebody. Teach somebody. Build something. Have your answer ready.
