Good Morning, Fam'! On July 10, 1875, Mary McLeod Bethune was born in Mayesville, South Carolina, the 15th of 17 children to parents who were formerly enslaved. She picked 250 pounds of cotton a day by the time she was nine years old. She walked miles to reach a one room mission school because she was the only child in her family who got the chance to attend. And in 1904, with $1.50 and 5 students, she opened the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls. That school became Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida, the only HBCU in America founded by a Black woman. She became the first Black woman to lead a federal agency under President Roosevelt, she was the Director of the Division of Negro Affairs within the National Youth Administration (NYA) in 1936. She founded the National Council of Negro Women. She was the only Black woman in the room when the United Nations charter was drafted.
