Today I am honoring my mother Sandra Fenner as she celebrates her 85th birthday. She is the ultimate blueprint of perseverance. She graduated high school in 1958 during the last year of segregated schools in Virginia. She went on to graduate from Norfolk State College where she marched in the Norfolk State band and participated in the historic Norfolk sit ins. As a single mother, she purchased her home in 1977 just a few years after women were legally allowed to do so without a male co signer. She has served for years as her civic league president, her school alumni chapter president, and a leader in her church civic ministries. She used her resilience as an elementary educator and community activist to overcome every obstacle creating a better life for her sons and her fellowman.
