On this day, October 13, 1792, the cornerstone of the White House was laid. Here is the part the history books whisper: enslaved Black people built it. Our ancestors quarried the stone, sawed the timber, fired the brick, and raised the walls of the most powerful house on earth, and when it was done, they did not own a single nail of it. They could not vote. They could not even walk through the front door as free people. They built the house, and someone else held the keys. Sit with that, because it is the oldest story in America, we are the builders, and too often we have built everything except our own wealth.

From the White House to the railroads to Wall Street to Silicon Valley, Black hands and Black genius have built the engines of this country. The pattern was always the same: our labor was welcome, our ownership was not. We were handed the shovel and denied the deed. That gap between building and owning is exactly where the wealth we created slipped through our fingers for 400 years. And make no mistake, that was not an accident. It was the design.
